Project planning is an essential part of project management that focuses on the detailed planning and definition of the steps required for the successful completion of a project. Project planning begins with the development of the project idea to determine for whom, what, by when, and with what budget the project is to be developed or implemented.

The next step is to define the necessary project phases and work packages. The resulting work breakdown structure is then refined with tasks, resources, and deliverables. Where necessary, requirements can be linked to the project planning artifacts to ensure their traceability.
